Many people come to see me believing they have “too much stomach acid”, a sugar
addiction, or simply “bad genes.”

But in practice, what I see far more often is something deeper — poor digestion driving systemic imbalance.

This blog shares a real-world clinical pattern I see weekly in practice:
reflux, bloating, candida overgrowth, fatigue, skin issues, rising cholesterol and bone
loss — all connected.

If this sounds familiar, read on.

The Pattern I See So Often in Clinic

This client presented with:
• Chronic bloating, reflux and IBS-type symptoms
• Long-term PPI use for reflux
• Osteoporosis
• Dry, itchy skin and dandruff
• Fatigue, poor sleep and anxiety
• Sugar cravings (especially at night)
• Elevated blood fats and borderline blood sugar

Individually, these issues are often treated separately. Functionally, they are part of the same story.

Reflux Isn’t Always “Too Much Acid”

One of the most misunderstood conditions is reflux. In many cases, reflux is not caused by excess acid, but by:

• Low stomach acid
• Inflammation of the lower oesophagus
• Poor breakdown of food
• Gas and fermentation pushing pressure upward

When food is not properly digested:

• It ferments
• It feeds unfriendly microbes (including candida)
• It increases bloating and reflux
• It inflames the oesophagus

Suppressing acid long-term can bring short-term relief — but it often worsens the root
cause.

PPIs, Digestion & Bone Health: The Overlooked Link

Proton pump inhibitors reduce stomach acid — but stomach acid is essential for:

• Calcium absorption
• Magnesium absorption
• Protein digestion
• Vitamin B12 uptake

This matters greatly for anyone with osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Without proper digestion:

• Nutrients pass through unabsorbed
• Bones, skin, muscles and energy suffer
• Gut imbalance deepens over time

Candida: More Than a “Sugar Problem”

Candida overgrowth is rarely just about eating sugar.

In this case, signs included:

• White coating on the tongue
• Strong evening sugar cravings
• Dry mouth
• Itchy skin
• Fatigue
• Previous skin rashes

Candida thrives when:

• Food is poorly digested
• Stomach acid is low
• Fermentation increases
• Liver clearance is sluggish

Candida can drive cravings, affect mood, and worsen inflammation — especially at night
when willpower is low and emotional eating patterns emerge.

Poor Fat Digestion = High Cholesterol & Fatty Liver

When fats are not properly digested:

• Cholesterol can rise
• Triglycerides increase
• Fatty liver develops
• Stools become sticky or difficult to flush

This is not always a dietary fat issue —
often it’s a digestive enzyme and bile flow issue

Blood Sugar, Stress & the “Borderline Diabetic” Label

This client had borderline fasting glucose but no HbA1c or insulin testing.
Stress, poor sleep, inflammation and gut imbalance can all:
• Elevate blood sugar
• Increase fat storage
• Worsen cravings
• Mimic insulin resistance
Without full testing, many people are labelled prematurely — without addressing the drivers.

Thyroid Function at the Cellular Level

Standard thyroid tests can look “normal” while symptoms persist.
In complex cases, I often assess:

• Reverse T3
• Thyroid antibodies
• Cellular hypothyroidism patterns

Energy, digestion and metabolism are all thyroid-dependent — even when TSH appears fine.

Why a Step-By-Step Approach Matters

One of the most important parts of my work is not overwhelming the client.
In this case, the initial focus was:
• Supporting digestion
• Reducing microbial overgrowth
• Supporting liver clearance
• Stabilising blood sugar and cravings

Not everything is addressed at once — because healing happens best in layers

If You See Yourself in This Story…

You may have been told:

• “Your tests are normal”
• “Just take the PPI”
• “Avoid sugar”
• “It’s just age or stress”

But your body is giving you signals, not random symptoms.

How I Help Clients Like This

I work by:

• Identifying patterns, not labels
• Addressing digestion first
• Supporting the gut–liver–hormone axis
• Using targeted testing only when it adds value
• Creating personalised, realistic protocols

If reflux, bloating, candida, fatigue or bone health concerns feel connected — they
usually are.
