Charmaine’s Kitchen Wisdom
“Your body doesn’t need perfection—it needs nourishment. Every time you choose a meal rich in colourful vegetables, quality protein, healthy fats and fibre, you’re providing your cells with the building blocks they need to produce energy, repair damage and support vibrant health. Healing often begins with one simple decision: to feed your cells rather than simply fill your stomach.”
Why Your Body Isn’t Lazy… It’s Running on Low Battery
“Let food be your first medicine, because every meal is another opportunity to nourish your cells.”
We Spend So Much of Our Lives Looking After Everything Except Ourselves
Some of us are raising children.
Others are caring for ageing parents.
Many are running businesses, working long hours, studying, juggling finances or trying to simply keep up with the pace of modern life.
We tell ourselves we’ll eat properly later.
We’ll exercise next week.
We’ll take a holiday one day.
We’ll slow down after this project.
We’ll get more sleep once life settles down.
Sound familiar?
The trouble is… life rarely slows down on its own.
Instead, we become experts at surviving.
We grab a coffee instead of breakfast.
We eat lunch standing up.
We snack because we’re starving by three o’clock.
We finally sit down to dinner exhausted.
Then we wake up and do it all again tomorrow.
For a while, our bodies cope remarkably well.
Until one day they begin whispering.
The Whispers Are Easy to Ignore
Perhaps you’ve noticed…
- You don’t bounce out of bed anymore.
- Your afternoon energy disappears.
- You’re relying on coffee to keep going.
- You can’t concentrate like you used to.
- You forget words.
- Exercise feels harder.
- You gain weight despite eating the same way.
- Your skin looks tired.
- Your patience isn’t what it once was.
- You don’t recover after busy days.
Many people assume this is simply ageing.
As a naturopath, I often see something different.
Your Body Isn’t Lazy…
It’s Running on Low Battery
Imagine driving your car every day with the fuel warning light on.
You still make it to work.
You still collect the children.
You still answer emails.
You still smile.
But every kilometre places a little more strain on the engine.
Eventually the engine begins asking for fuel.
Not because it’s broken.
Because it’s been doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Your body works in much the same way.
Meet Your Mitochondria
Inside almost every cell in your body are tiny structures called mitochondria.
I like to call them your cellular power stations.
Their job is simple.
Take the food you eat…
Combine it with oxygen…
And produce ATP.
ATP is your body’s energy currency.
Without ATP…
Your brain cannot think efficiently.
Your muscles cannot contract effectively.
Your liver cannot detoxify efficiently.
Your thyroid hormones cannot work optimally inside your cells.
Your immune system cannot respond appropriately.
Your skin cannot repair itself efficiently.
Even your body’s ability to heal, adapt and recover depends on these tiny energy factories working well.
Why Busy People Are Often the First to Feel It
One of the biggest myths I hear is…
“I’ll eat when I have time.”
Unfortunately, your cells don’t know you’re busy.
Your mitochondria still require nutrients every single day.
Skipping meals.
Living on coffee.
Eating highly processed convenience foods.
Working through lunch.
Sleeping poorly.
Living under constant stress.
These don’t just affect your stomach.
They affect every cell in your body.
Over time, your body simply becomes incredibly efficient at surviving on less.
Food Is Information
One of the philosophies I teach every day in clinic is this:
Food is far more than calories.
Every mouthful you eat sends information to your body.
Some foods tell your cells…
“We have everything we need to repair.”
Others tell your body…
“Resources are limited. Slow things down.”
Your body is constantly listening.
That’s why I don’t simply teach people what to avoid.
I teach them what to add.
Building a Cellular Energy Plate
Rather than following complicated diets, I encourage my clients to build every meal around a simple principle.
Imagine your dinner plate.
🥗 Half your plate
Colourful vegetables and salads.
These provide the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant compounds your cells need to function well.
🍗 One quarter
Quality protein.
Protein provides the building blocks for muscles, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and healthy mitochondria.
🍠 One quarter
Slow-release carbohydrates.
Foods like pumpkin, sweet potato, quinoa and oats provide a steady source of fuel rather than the highs and crashes associated with refined foods.
Finish with:
✓ Extra virgin olive oil
✓ Fresh herbs
✓ Nuts or seeds
✓ Plenty of water throughout the day
This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about consistently giving your body the raw materials it needs.
We Live in a Fight-or-Flight World
One thing we rarely talk about is how stress changes the way we eat.
When we’re rushing, worrying or living in constant fight-or-flight, our body prioritises survival over repair.
Digestion becomes less efficient.
Sleep often suffers.
Inflammation may increase.
Histamine can become more active in susceptible people.
We become more likely to skip meals, reach for sugar or rely on caffeine.
Over time, this creates what I often describe as an acid-forming lifestyle.
Not because your blood becomes acidic—your body regulates that very carefully—but because chronic stress, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep and ongoing inflammation increase the body’s metabolic workload.
The aim of my Food as Medicine approach is to create a mineral-rich, plant-forward way of eating that supports recovery rather than survival.
Next Week in The Healing Kitchen…
If you’ve ever wondered what a truly mitochondrial-friendly meal looks like, I’ve created one of my favourite recipes.
It’s simple.
It’s nourishing.
It freezes beautifully.
Busy families can cook it once and enjoy it throughout the week.
Every ingredient has been carefully selected to support:
- Cellular energy production.
- Brain function.
- Healthy ageing.
- Liver function.
- Thyroid health.
- Immune balance.
- Natural detoxification.
Because food should work just as hard for your health as you do every day.

Final Thoughts
Your body isn’t asking you to be perfect.
It’s asking you to nourish it.
One colourful plate.
One balanced meal.
One glass of water.
One walk outside.
One good night’s sleep.
These small choices may seem insignificant on their own, but repeated consistently they become the foundation of vibrant health.
Because healing doesn’t begin with perfection.
It begins when you start feeding your cells instead of simply filling your stomach.
