The herb I use when histamine reactions, skin flare ups, sinus congestion and inflammatory patterns keep crossing paths

Most people have eaten Perilla frutescens without even realising it.
It’s commonly used in Asian cuisine.
Its leaves appear in Japanese and Korean dishes.
Its seeds are used in oils.
And yet…
very few people understand how useful this herb can be clinically.
And in my clinic?
I use it very differently.
Because I often see clients whose symptoms seem unrelated on paper…
but are deeply connected underneath.
They may tell me:
“My skin suddenly reacts to everything.”
“I flush easily.”
“My sinuses are constantly blocked.”
“Wine makes me itchy.”
“My eczema flares randomly.”
“My mouth feels irritated.”
“I feel reactive to foods I used to tolerate.”
And often they’ve been told:
it’s stress
it’s allergies
it’s hormones
it’s sensitive skin
And sometimes those things play a role.
But often histamine is sitting quietly in the background making everything louder.
What histamine actually does
Histamine gets blamed for a lot.
But most people don’t understand that histamine itself is not the enemy.
It plays important roles in the body.
Histamine helps regulate:
immune responses
stomach acid secretion
brain signalling
inflammatory responses
blood vessel dilation
Your body needs histamine.
The problem happens when histamine becomes excessive…
or your ability to break it down becomes overwhelmed.
That’s when people may experience:
itching
flushing
hives
eczema flares
sinus congestion
runny nose
food reactivity
headaches
rapid skin reactions
poor tolerance to alcohol
And sometimes these symptoms seem random…
until patterns emerge.
Traditional medicine understood this long before social media
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Perilla frutescens has a long history of use.
Traditionally it has been used to support:
respiratory health
digestive discomfort
seafood reactions
nausea
external wind/cold patterns
lung support
movement of stagnant patterns
While I practice naturopathy—not TCM—I respect how long traditional systems have understood this plant.
And modern practitioners are still learning from that wisdom.
Why I use it in clinic
This is where my approach may look different.
I use Perilla frutescens when I’m seeing overlap between:
histamine flares
reactive skin
sinus congestion
respiratory irritation
oral irritation
food sensitivity
candida protocols where histamine reactions are also present
Because sometimes killing microbes without calming histamine makes people feel worse.
And this is something many people miss.
I also use it topically
This surprises people.
But sometimes I may use Perilla frutescens in topical applications.
Depending on the client, I may combine it into:
vitamin E cream bases
jojoba oil preparations
particularly when skin feels:
itchy
inflamed
reactive
histamine driven
This is never a one-size-fits-all approach.
But it can be incredibly useful in the right person.
It also comes in tablet form
Some clients prefer tablets.
And sometimes this can be very helpful depending on lifestyle, travel or compliance.
Because let’s be honest…
not everyone loves liquid herbs.
And not everyone wants another powder on their kitchen bench.
How I may use it during flares
During certain skin, respiratory or sinus flares…
I may sometimes have clients dilute:
10ml herbal liquid
into 50ml distilled water
and use 3–5 drops hourly
This is highly individual and depends on the person.
But in the right case, this can be incredibly supportive during acute flare periods.
It may even sit beside Fire Cider
This depends entirely on the person.
But if someone has depleted their immune system through:
poor sleep
stress
alcohol
poor diet
sinus congestion
frequent illness
sometimes my Fire Cider may also become part of broader immune support conversations.
Not as a quick fix.
And never as a replacement for proper care.
But as part of rebuilding resilience.
Herbal medicine should be personalised
This is why I rarely use one herb in isolation.
Perilla frutescens may be combined with:
Houttuynia cordata
Fumaria officinalis
Marshmallow root
Calendula
Sage
Because people are complex.
And protocols copied online rarely respect that.
Want personalised support?
If you’re dealing with:
histamine flares
itchy skin
sinus congestion
reactive skin
food sensitivity
oral irritation
recurring flare patterns
this is something I assess both in clinic in Adelaide and virtually Australia-wide.
Sometimes people need relief quickly
Not everyone books with me when life feels calm.
Sometimes people book because they’re flaring right now.
Their skin is reacting.
Their sinuses are blocked.
Their mouth feels irritated.
They’re itchy.
They’re flushing.
They’ve reacted to food, alcohol or seasonal triggers and they want help quickly.
This is exactly where my Everyday Ailment Consults can be incredibly helpful.
These shorter acute appointments allow me to support what’s happening right now—often using herbal medicine to help calm the immediate flare—while we decide whether deeper root-cause work is needed later.
Because sometimes people need immediate relief first.
Then we investigate why the pattern keeps returning.
And both matter.
