Sometimes the Gut Doesn’t Need More Stimulation — It Needs Something Gentle

There is a particular type of digestive client where I find myself thinking less about stimulating digestion and much more about protecting the tissue that digestion is happening through.

They might tell me:
“My stomach feels raw.”
“Everything seems to irritate me.”
“I get burning or discomfort even with things that are supposed to be good for digestion.”
“My throat feels scratchy all the time.”
“My gut feels sensitive rather than simply sluggish.”

Or sometimes they say something I hear often in sensitive digestive presentations:
“I feel as though my whole digestive lining just needs settling down.”
This is where Marshmallow Root becomes one of my favourite herbs.

I’m Charmaine D, Naturopathic Herbalist, and through my Herbal Remedy Bar I don’t always wantherbs that push the body harder.
Sometimes I want a herb that simply brings softness, moisture and protection.

Marshmallow Root ( Althaea officinalis) is rich in mucilage — beautiful slippery plant polysaccharides thatbecome particularly interesting when mucous membranes are dry, irritated or reactive.

And because that mucilage is such an important part of why I choose Marshmallow, I have a veryparticular preference for how I use it.
In my liquid formulas, I particularly love Marshmallow as an alcohol-free glycertract.

That preparation fits the character of the herb beautifully.
